In 1990 (!) I visited my first "honour stand" on Salt Spring Island and after buying a home on the Island a decade later, we started frequenting farm stands in addition to shopping at the Tuesday and Saturday markets. The Salt Spring Island Farm Stands map project was inspired by the many farmers I have met over the years: The late Michael Larmour, whose Beddis Road farm stand was always stocked with ripe tomatoes, zucchini, carrots and other farm goodies; Sandy Robley, whose Sunset Farm has kept us supplied for over two decades with lamb, sheepskins, chair covers, knitting wool and free visits to pet her donkey when we had "city kids" visiting; Michael and Jeanne-Marie Ableman of Foxglove Farm who welcomed our kids at Farm Camp and taught them where real food comes from; the Lloyds at Stowel Lake Farm who immerse as many visitors as possible into the meditative nature of farm living; Haidee Hart and team who are leading a new foodie culture on the Island, from farm, to farm stand, to table.
